Steven  Delchin, Esq.

Steve Delchin is a nationally recognized lawyer in the field of professional ethics. He is a member of the Squire Patton Boggs Office of General Counsel and serves as counsel to the firm’s Ethics Committee. In these roles, Steve advises on professional responsibility and risk management issues, defends the firm’s interests in sensitive matters and drafts and implements internal firm policies. Steve is regarded as the “ethics lawyer’s lawyer.” He is a go-to advisor on complex ethics issues across jurisdictions. He has drafted numerous winning briefs and countless internal opinions that shape his firm’s position in litigation, transactional and counseling matters. Steve is also a legal ethics innovator. He is the creative force behind Squire Patton Boggs’ highly acclaimed annual ethics program, which is one of the most engaging and dynamic legal education programs in the US and unmatched in the legal industry for its production values. 

Steve is a thought leader in the rapidly evolving area of artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and AI law. He has focused on AI ethics since 2018 and in 2019 chaired the Bias Section Subcommittee of the American Bar Association AI Ethics Working Group, which proposed recommendations to address bias in AI legal tools. Steve writes and lectures extensively on the use of generative AI in the practice of law through the lens of professional ethics. He has been quoted extensively by Bloomberg Law on cutting edge issues in AI ethics. Steve also has numerous publications to his credit, including a recent article published by Reuters on “AI washing” and the first-ever publication exploring how the rules of professional conduct might apply to the representation of sentient AI. 

In addition to his many roles for the firm, Steve maintains an active litigation and appellate practice. He has successfully represented clients before the Supreme Court of Ohio, the US Courts of Appeals for the Second and Sixth Circuits and the US Supreme Court. Since 2016, Steve has served on the faculty of the Practising Law Institute (PLI) New Lawyers Training Program, teaching law office management topics including client relations, conflicts of interest, law office technology and effective lawyer marketing. He is also a regular panelist for PLI’s annual “Think Like a Lawyer, Talk Like a Geek” program, which features cutting edge discussions at the intersection of technology and the law. 

Prior to joining the firm in 1997, Steve clerked for the Honorable Alan E. Norris of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, where he gained invaluable insights into the judiciary and appellate practice that continue to inform his work today.
