Robert Plotkin is a patent attorney and co-managing partner at Blueshift IP, a boutique patent law firm, where he has specialized in developing strategic software and AI patent portfolios for nearly 30 years. Robert is an MIT-educated computer scientist and engineer whose technical background and combined expertise in patent law and computer science enable him to obtain broad, strong, and defensible patents that maximize return on investment for clients worldwide. 

Robert has continued to obtain software patents consistently even after the Supreme Court's Alice decision, when many companies stopped seeking software patent protection entirely. His clients have profitably sold and licensed the patents Robert obtained for them to major corporations, and his small- and medium-sized corporate clients have leveraged defensive patent portfolios to avoid paying millions of dollars in legal fees defending against larger competitors. 

Robert is a thought leader and innovator in the intersection of AI and patent law. He wrote The Genie in the Machine: How Computer-Automated Inventing is Revolutionizing Law and Business (Stanford University Press, 2009), the first book examining AI's impact on patents and the patent system. His latest book, AI Armor (2024), provides comprehensive strategies for obtaining intellectual property protection for innovative AI technologies. Robert is himself a named inventor and owner of over 25 patents and patent applications, bringing practical inventor experience to his patent practice. Over the course of his career, Robert has developed proprietary processes for crafting patents with maximum value for sale, licensing, and defense against competitor lawsuits.
